Gary is back at home, and is undergoing strenuous physical therapy. Although he has come a long way in his recovery, he still has a long way to go, so please continue to keep him in your prayers.

Men ~

Gary Ostlund was in a motorcycle accident in Wisconsin Friday, June 22nd, and was air-lifted in to North Memorial with serious injuries, including brain trauma. The doctors have removed some fluid in order to reduce pressure on his brain, and although I do not have any further information, it is obviously a time for serious prayer.

Gary has been a regular on Saturday mornings at MOE for quite some time, and we really appreciate his trekking down from Oak Grove to spend time in prayer and discussion with us. I have included a photo of Gary from when he assisted with Good Friday Stations.

As brothers in Christ, there are times that we need to stand up for one of our brothers, and then there are times like this; when we need to drop to our knees in prayer for one of our brothers. Please lift Gary up not only in your daily prayers, but also lift him up during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass this weekend.

In Christ, through Mary

Here is the latest that I have, from October 12, 2007:

Subject: Gary

Dear Friends and Family:

Thought I would update you on the progress Gary has made since our move to NB Health and Rehab.  His speech and swallow are improving daily.  Gary is moving his legs and even managed to walk 20 feet, walker assisted.  Thankfully, his memory is good and he still has that wonderful sense of humor.
On Friday, October 19th, Gary is celebrating his 53rd birthday.  We would love to have folks stop by for a piece of cake sometime between 2pm and 8pm.   We're in Room 178.  The address is 825 1st Ave N, New Brighton.
Gary and I appreciate all your continued thoughts and prayers.

Subject: Gary Update

Hello All:

We have made another move.  Gary was discharged from Bethesda on Friday is now at New Brighton Health and Rehab, (825 1st Ave NW).  He is currently in room 179, but will be moving to a private room as soon as one becomes available.  We selected this facility for their agressive therapy program, especially working with speech and swallowing disorders.  Generally, visiting hours are 8am to 8pm but we aren't sure what his therapy schedule is at this time.

Officially, Gary is out of the coma.  He has much rehab to do on his arms, legs and of course his speech.  Bless his heart, he is talking, but with much difficulty.  It will ALL get better!!

Again our love and thanks for all your prayers.

Bonnie

I just visited Gary and Bonnie this morning and Gary's condition is the same, he is still in a deep coma.  Physically he looks very good just a broken lower left leg which will be repaired this afternoon. Gary is still connected to a respirator but does breathe some on his own. There is also some brain activity but I am not sure how much. Gary has very little bruising and only a few raspberries.

Fr. Reiser and Fr. Livingston were up to visit on Sunday. Bonnie is very appreciative of the write up you posted on the web. She is at the hospital every morning when the doctors visit and tends to their business in the afternoon. If anyone goes to visit in the morning and is a Eucharistic Minister she would like it if you could bring communion to her. I think we will need a way to post a notice if we bring communion so there is only one per day bringing communion.

Please pass on to all MOE.

Best Regards

Steve

I was blessed to have spent time with Gary, his Mother Joan, his sister Mary and close family friend Dave today. He remains in a coma and appears stable. Hopefully all went well with the rod being put in his leg today. He is on a waiting list at Bethesda for long term rehab. The family has a beautiful faith and are very thankful for your posting updates and prayer requests. Let us continue to keep Gary and his family in our thoughts and prayers. Please pass on to MOE.

God Bless,

Tom

Gary was moved to Bethesda Hospital  (559 Capitol Blvd • St. Paul, MN 55103 • 651-232-2000) around July 5th. He is still in a coma, is off of the respirator, and is breathing on his own.
